As cited in the U.S. Department of Education’s recent “Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies” (Revised September 2010), “Students in online conditions performed modestly better, on average, than those learning the same material through traditional face-to-face instruction” (p. xiv) and, notably, “Instruction combining online and face-to-face elements had a larger advantage relative to purely face-to-face instruction than did purely online instruction” (p. xv). Not only do students perform better in blended courses, but the electronic resources inherent in the modality offer other advantages as well student performance analytics can be used to study and better understand student learning. Data analytics can also identify students who need early intervention, thus increasing retention. The online tools available in blended courses can also significantly enhance student engagement, ensuring that all students participate in course discussions and benefit from collaborative learning. Many faculty and students lament the loss of face-to-face contact. Blended learning retains the face-to-face element, making it-in the words of many faculty-the best of both worlds.
Research shows that blended learning is most successful when viewed as a pedagogical approach that combines the effectivenes and socialization opportunities of the classroom with the technological enhanced active learning possibilites of the online environment, rather than a ratio of dlivery modalities. In other words rather as a fundamental redesign of the instructional model with the following characteristics:

- a shift from lecture to student centered instruction in which student become active and interactive learnings in all sessions
- incrases in interactions between student-instructor, student-student, student-content, and student-outside resources
- inetegrated formative and summative assessement mechanissms for students and instructors.

Conducting Research in Online and Blended Learning Environments
by Anthony Picciano
Click here for an abstract and review on the 2015 book: Conducting Research in Online and Blended Learning Environments
This book examines various perspectives, issues, and methods for conducting research in online and blended learning environments. The book provides in-depth examinations of the perspectives and issues that anyone considering research in online or blended learning will find insightful as they plan their own inquiries. Grounded in educational research theory, this is invaluable to both the serious researcher as well as the occasional evaluator.
